The 7-minute Brazilian – Fact, fiction or somewhere in between.
Nobody really loves going to their Beauty Therapist for a Brazilian wax, but lets face it, we love the result.
So you may have seen or heard about the ‘7 minute Brazilian’, I know what your thinking 7 minutes great, I might try that! But before you rush out and book your appointment lets talk about what that really means.
Picture this, you walk into the salon (a little bit nervous), you are shown to the treatment room or perhaps a waxing bed sectioned off by curtains, you undress and lay down. The therapist walks in with a quick ‘hi’ and before you can answer her your privates are literally covered in strip wax, probably with you bottom up and on all fours!
Wax strips are being ripped off left, right and everywhere where in between, there is little time for conversation, preparation or post wax care, your therapist is on a deadline and her next client is waiting for her! Your done, and your out the door. When you get home you see quite a number of hairs that have not been removed and you feel sticky with wax residue, and are more sensitive down there than normal. How are you feeling about this ‘Speed Brazilian’?
Now let me paint a different picture for you ….
You walk into your salon, you are greeted by your name and a familiar face, you are shown to the treatment room and left in total privacy to prepare, you lay down on a comfortable bed, with your head on a pillow and music in the background. Your regular Therapist comes in and asks what you have been doing since that last time she saw you.
She understands the skins sensitivity in different areas and uses a combination of strip wax and hot wax based on her experience and knowledge. She ALWAYS removes the wax in the opposite direction to the hair growth ensuring to prevent any bruising and ingrown hairs, she takes her time to ensure you are comfortable throughout the treatment and that your leave with an excellent result. Your Therapist applies post treatment oil to remove any wax residue, as well as soothe and hydrate the skin. She meets you at the counter after you have had time to dress and books your next appointment. Now how do you feel?
So the first scenario describes a production line. It is super fast, most likely super rough and not to mention a painful experience. This type of wax technique can cause hairs to snap which can result in some in severe ingrown hairs, bruising and very sore and tender skin.
I do not believe that as Beauty Professionals that this is they way we should be conducting treatments, yes it speeds things up and we can get more clients through the door per day but it goes against my ethical grain. In my opinion this is not professional conduct, we are trained in correct techniques, hair growth patterns, recognizing different skin types, and selecting waxes accordingly.
Beauty Therapy is not a case of one size fits all and is certainly not about rushing your work. It is about providing outstanding results, forming relationships and using our expertise, knowledge and experience to offer our clients the best possible advice, treatment and outcome for every individual.
